10 Ways to Improve Your Self-Care This Summer!

Updated: Aug 8, 2019

“Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every single day and the rest will fall into place.” – Unknown

Summer is officially here, which means it’s time for sun, sand, and most importantly—self-care! Summer is my all time favorite season. It’s all about reconnecting with yourself, re-centering, and recharging to achieve that sought after summer glow. To really get your glow on this summer, your best bet is to really amp up your self-care routine. Self-care is an act we do to get our mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical state in check and aligned. It doesn't just mean a sporadic bath bomb bubble bath or binge watching Netflix every so often. It’s all about being good to yourself in anyway possible, listening to your body when you need a break, and keeping a positive and uplifting mindset. Always remember that self-care isn’t just a once a month type thing—it can be an everyday activity as well.

We as women are natural born nurturers and are constantly putting the needs and wants of others before ourselves. But now it's time to focus on you, sis! Self-care, getting rest, and listening to your body, is what allows you to keep on keeping on. We cannot help others if we do not help ourselves first. A classic example is the routine pre-flight safety instructions where we are all told to care for ourselves first, prior to assisting others with oxygen masks.

Author Maureen Joyce Connolly put it best, “Practice self-rescue first before you ‘help’ someone else”. Remind yourself of what you deserve, and start implementing actions in your routine to improve your overall well-being. Summertime is an ideal opportunity to achieve just that.

Here are ten ways to improve your self-care this summer:

1. Travel

Summer is a great time to take advantage of traveling, so grab those passports and IDs and go! Take the time for yourself to book a trip. Whether is for two days or two weeks— make time for yourself to explore a new place or just kick back and relax. You may even want to make it a solo trip and experience a new location on your own. Utilize apps such as Hopper, Kayak, or Skyscanner to stay on top of the latest travel deals. Whether you decide to travel internationally or domestically, take advantage, book that flight, and just get away!

2. The Great Outdoors

What is summer without spending time outside and soaking up the sun? Take advantage of the warm and sunny weather, take in some vitamin D, and maybe even catch a nice tan. Be one with nature and enjoy this weather while it lasts. Being in nature calms you down from the hustle and bustle of life, lowers stress, and lifts your overall spirits. Whether it be taking a hike, sitting by the pool, or strolling around your neighborhood, committing more time in nature is always a plus. Visit a garden, become a plant mom, or switch up your gym routine and ditch the treadmill for a pleasant jog around a park.

3. Try Something New

Ever get tired of the same old routine? That could mean that it’s time to switch things up! Break away from your comfort zone and try something new. Join a book club, play a recreational sport, try new foods, take art classes, or even start biking around the city rather than driving. Engaging in a new activity will get your creative juices flowing, allow you to meet new people, learn more about yourself, and breaks up the routine of life.

4. Take a Social Media Break

Taking a quick cleanse from social media is always good for your mental health. Shutting off outside noise can be one of the best things you can do for yourself. Use that time away from social media to journal and get more in tune with yourself, or pick up a new book. Social media can be a large distraction, and giving it a rest for a while allows you to clear your mind and reclaim your “me time”. During this summer, remember to set some time to reconnect with yourself and shut off the outside world for a bit.

5. Just Say “No”

“Self-care is how you take your power back.” – Lalah Delia

Prioritize your wants and needs this summer and don’t be afraid to turn down things that you simply don’t want to partake in. Utilizing “no” can save you from burning out, stretching yourself thin, and can even save you some coin! Catching up on “me time” and increasing rest and relaxation is the key to keeping energy levels up and staying afloat. Summer is a great time to spend with friends and family, but don’t feel bad for taking some time for you—to really disconnect and recharge. It’s okay to say no! Always remember to do what suits you best. Protecting your peace is vital in practicing self-care.

6. Refresh Your Summer Wardrobe

Cheers to the season of wearing less and going out more! Summer time allows us to start showing more skin and being experimental with brighter colors, bold patterns, and eclectic styles. It’s always a mood and confidence boost to have new clothes or shoes on. Utilize the summer months and express yourself through a new summertime wardrobe. Summer sales are everywhere around this time of year-- take advantage to revamp your closet and update your style for the warmer months ahead.

7. Treat Yo’Self

Okay, let's be real…who doesn’t like to treat themselves? Put time aside and treat yourself to a massage, a manicure/pedicure, shopping, or even a full spa day. Whether it means going alone and having the day to yourself, or inviting a friend to just kick back and unwind. If you can’t decide on how to treat yourself every now and then, tear off a few pieces of paper and write certain things you would want to treat yourself to, and pick out of a jar or a hat on a weekly or monthly basis! This will keep things exciting and fun throughout the summer. You could even make it a challenge and have your friends partake with you… Get creative!

8. Exercise

We all know the saying that summer bodies are made in the winter… but there's always an exception to every rule. Keep the momentum going and truly make it a “hot girl summer” by keeping that body toned, fit, and strong all around. Keeping a work out regimen in your routine is important to keep your mind, body, and soul in check. Not only will your body thank you, but your overall health and spirit will too.

9. Implement a Mindful Morning Routine

The way you start your morning sets the tone for your day. Implement a new daily activity into your morning routine. Partake in a morning yoga session, practice some new daily affirmations, open your windows to let fresh air in, play some new music, or tend to a plant or garden. Do something new each morning to keep your energy clear as you start your day. My morning routine always consists of opening all the curtains and letting morning light in, a 10-15 minute morning stretch, and a daily affirmation and/or bible reading. This allows me to have a mindful morning and prepares me for the day ahead.

10. Drink Your Water and Mind Your Business, Sis

One of the major keys to self-care is drinking water and staying hydrated. Sparking, flat, or infused, remember to stay hydrated this summer as we endure this heat. Keep your body free of toxins and keep your skin glowing! Increasing your water drinking habits is an important self-care act to increase this summer. Investing in a Brita filter and purchasing a reusable insulated water bottle such as S’well, or my personal favorite— the YETI water bottle, is sure to keep you on track with achieving you water intake goals this summer.

You are light and you are love and it's imperative to take the time to recharge and give yourself the love you deserve! I challenge you to apply at least five new self-care practices into your daily or weekly routine this summer.

You deserve it and you will thank yourself later!
